The 2024 Toyota bZ4X may not be revolutionary, but it should satisfy both Toyota enthusiasts and those new to electric vehicles. It boasts a comfortable ride, an attractive array of standard features and a respectable drive range, though many of its rivals can go farther on a full charge.

Drive & Performance 7.0

Benign might be the best word to describe the bZ4X's driving experience, and many drivers will likely be fine with that. This electric SUV is easy to maneuver, it brakes predictably without too much regenerative grab, and it features a comfortable ride quality. However, don't expect to go canyon carving in the bZ4X, and one-pedal driving is not offered. Many EVs offer super quick straight-line acceleration, but the bZ4X isn't one of them. It delivers more-than-satisfactory power, but it's not a drag racer.

Front-wheel-drive models are equipped with a single 150-kilowatt motor generating 201 horsepower. For all-wheel-drive models, each axle features an 80-kilowatt motor for a total of 214 horsepower. The bZ4X also offers options that help it handle light off-roading and inclement weather conditions better. This includes an AWD X-Mode, which lets you choose from Snow/Dirt, Snow/Mud and Grip Control drive modes.

MPG-equivalent estimates for the 2024 bZ4X were not available at the time of writing, but Toyota expects them to be similar to the 2023 model. The 2023 front-wheel-drive XLE is rated at 119 MPGe in combined city/highway driving, while the FWD Limited has a 114 MPGe rating. With all-wheel drive, the XLE dips to 104 MPGe combined and the Limited to 102 MPGe. These estimates are pretty good for the electric SUV segment. For more information on these ratings, check out What Is MPGe?

The bZ4X's driving range is mediocre. The XLE with front-wheel drive has a range of 252 miles, while the Limited with front-wheel drive is rated at 236 miles. Opting for all-wheel drive decreases range slightly, with the XLE estimated at 228 miles and the Limited at 222 miles. Those with range anxiety may want to check out alternatives like the Kia EV6 or Ford Mustang Mach-E.

The bZ4X's charge port is located on the driver's side front fender. Toyota provides a year of complimentary charging at EVgo locations, and the bZ4X is also compatible with DC fast charging stations. Home charging using a 240-volt outlet is the most convenient method, and it takes around nine hours for a full charge. A Level 2 public charging station offers a similar charge time.

For the quickest charge, a public DC fast charging station is the best solution. Level 3 50-kW chargers will deliver up to an 80% charge in about an hour, while 150-kW DC fast chargers do it in just 20 to 30 minutes. Using a 120-volt household-style power outlet (Level 1 charging) adds approximately 8 miles of driving range per hour and is not recommended.

The 2024 Toyota Tacoma finally has the goods to go toe to toe with modernized mid-size rivals such as the Ford Ranger and Chevy Colorado. Not only does the all-new Taco have brawny bodywork, but its interior finally qualifies as contemporary, with an attractive aesthetic supplemented by crisp digital displays. The Tacoma lineup is also more diverse than most alternatives, offering two cab and bed configurations. Power comes from a new turbocharged four-cylinder with different output levels, but the mightiest Tacoma is the 326-hp hybrid model, which we review separately. Most models also trade the archaic leaf-spring rear suspension for more sophisticated coil springs, yet another example of the Tacoma's newfound competitiveness that helped earn it a spot on our 2024 Editors' Choice list.

What's New for 2024?

The Tacoma is fully redesigned for the 2024 model year, which marks the mid-size pickup truck's fourth generation. Along with inheriting a variant of the body-on-frame TNGA-F platform shared with the recently redesigned Toyota Tundra, the new Tacoma receives updated powertrains, more modern features, and a wider selection of trim levels, which includes the newly introduced Trailhunter that's geared towards people who enjoy overlanding.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

The price of the 2024 Toyota Tacoma starts at $32,995 and goes up to $53,595 depending on the trim and options.

Toyota hasn't yet released pricing details on the 2024 Tacoma's top two trims. But the best value lies in the SR5 model, which comes with the 278-hp version of the Tacoma's turbocharged four-cylinder engine, 17-inch aluminum wheels, blind-spot monitoring, fog lamps, integrated cargo-bed tie-down clamps, push-button start, and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror.
