Harmful side of
lentils:
Pulses can meet many of our daily protein needs. Pulses are
widely used to meet the daily demand for protein as they are excellent in taste
and cheap in price. Capable of meeting about 20 to 25 per cent of the daily
demand for meat, these pulses are cultivated in only 5-6 per cent of the
agricultural land in the country, which requires import assistance to meet the
demand. Pulses worth Rs 2,000 crore are imported every year from India, Canada,
Australia, Turkey and Nepal. Taking advantage of the growing demand for pulses,
a kind of unscrupulous trader is mixing chemicals and dyes in pulses and
selling wet pulses mixed with water for weight gain. Pulses are being made by
mixing harmful dyes of cloth with mug pulses and in the hope of selling extra
45 to 50 rupees per kg, pulses are being reduced by machine with the help of
chemicals, harmful dyes, hudul and oil. Research has shown that about 20 to 25
tonnes of adulterated pulses are sold in the market every day, which is about
one-fourth of the total demand. Also anchor pulses used as beef feed are being
indiscriminately mixed with pulses which are not healthy at all for human body.
As there are some similarities between lentils and lentils, traders are taking
the opportunity to mix this beef meal with human food.
